Abstract |
The Peranakan or Baba in Singapore and Malaysia is the descendant of the early Chinese immigrants who had married indigenous or Malay women in Malacca under Dutch rule in the 17th century. Subsequently, their “mixed” children also married each other or the new immigrants from China, who came in large numbers in the 19th century. Baba society forms an important part of Singapore and is closely-linked to the history of Malacca, Penang and Singapore. The Babas, also known as Peranakans, local-born Chinese or Straits-born Chinese, share cultural, linguistic and sociopolitical traits unique to Southeast Asia. |
