Abstract

"During the 1919 rice crisis in Malaya, Chop Ban Hin Lee along with most rice importers were under significant pressure. Angry mobs accused Chor Ee a Japanese National, an allegation which he quickly refuted by putting a notice in the Chinese newspaper to disclaim it. To set the record straight and with the help of M. Saravanamuttu (editor of Straits Echo), he applied a Malayan citizenship and only to be granted one in 1935." - Notes from the donor
