Urban Redevelopment of Raffles Place. Volume 2, Photographs of Drawings. |
Abstract |
Objects of the thesis: 1. To make a study and survey of existing accommodation, open space and traffic congestion and to propose possible improvement; 2. To study the habits of shoppers and investigate into the problems and feasibility of reorganizing the existing shopping precincts as provided in the Master Plan; 3. To provide a solution where pedestrian and vehicular traffic is segregated and adequate provision for public transport to discharge passengers and for the parking of private cars; 4. To improve the office building thus check the the growth of overcrowded and not well ventilated offices. The commercial building should be designed primarily for convenience and comfort of those who use it, and to improve the natural lighting and ventilation; 5. To improve the parking facilities in the business centre; 6. The basic aim was to create, as part of the central area of the Singapore city; a new urban development which would set a high standard of living, shopping, hotel and office accommodation and give a new and stimulating identity to the centre of the city; 7. To show that the spatial relationship of the proposed new buildings in this area based on contemporary concepts can be harmonised with the more formal axial and symmetrical composition of the historical buildings of Fullerton Square and the civic area; 8. The overall scheme shall be the main tourist attraction and a new landmark of the new born nation - the business centre of Malaysia - or the ’New York' of Malaysia |
