Description |
Food safety knowledge is created, validated, disseminated, and acted upon. It is conflicted, contextual, and contingent. The technology has a history, the knowledge has a history, and how everyday people interact with food safety ideas has a history. Taking three historical examples from Singapore – pure food advertising; anxiety about botulism; and the prohibition of saccharin – this paper suggests that food safety helps us reposition food and globalization. Singapore was, and still is, a step in a long supply chain of comestibles that pass into and through the port, in which the identity and location of the producers is obscured by distance, value adding, and the complexities of global trade. |

Description |
This study explored ethnic differences in risk and protective factors for suicide attempts, for the major ethnic groups in Singapore, and ethnic differences in prediction of lethality. Three years of medical records related to suicide attempters (N = 666) who were admitted to the emergency department of a large teaching hospital in Singapore were subjected to analysis. Of the sample, 69.2% were female, 30.8% male; 63.8% Chinese, 15.8% Indian, and 15.0% Malay. Indians were over-represented in this sample, as compared with the ethnic distribution in the general population. Ages ranged from 10 to 85 years old (M = 29.7, SD = 16.1). Ethnic differences were found in risk and protective factors, and perceived lethality of suicide attempts. All available variables were subjected to regression analyses for Chinese, Indian and Malay attempters to arrive at parsimonious models for prediction of perceived lethality. The findings were discussed in regards to implications in assessment of suicide risk and primary prevention for the multiethnic society in Singapore. |

Description |
He lost his mother when he was two and his father when he was 15. His leg was injured during the Japanese bombardment of Singapore and doctors almost amputated it. His medical studies were halted when the Japanese ruled Singapore. Despite such daunting circumstances, Dr James Mark Jeyasebasingam Supramaniam (popularly known as Dr JMJ) prevailed to emerge at the forefront of Singapore’s medical service during its nation-building phase. On the world stage, global medical annals credit him for the discovery of the cure for tuberculosis. This book traces the inspiring life of Dr JMJ within the larger context of the evolution of Singapore, from the 1800s when his older family members arrived on its shores, to the creation of the Singaporean nation during the 1950s and 1960s, in which JMJ played a pivotal part. |
