Abstract |
The first Chinese schools in Singapore were not founded by the Chinese but by the London Missionary Society. Early private schools were set up in the 1840s by the Chinese community following China’s age-old traditional private elementary educational system. Singapore’s modern Chinese education system was an offshoot of the Qing government’s reform movement in the late 1890s. Early modern Chinese schools were set up by respective clan associations. The first Chinese Middle School in Singapore came into being in 1919 and the founding of the Nanyang University in 1956 signified a complete Chinese education system from primary to university was achieved in Singapore. Since Independence in 1965, Chinese schools have been integrated into Singapore’s national education system. |
