Abstract |
Whilst driving along the OUTR, the authors noticed a large snake exiting the TNP, and attempting to cross OUTR in front of a preceding vehicle which had slowed down to avoid the snake. Apparently startled, the snake turned around and slithered back into TNP. After that vehicle had passed, the observers, expecting the snake to attempt crossing the road again, parked their vehicle at the edge of the road, and got out. They had intended to stop vehicles and human park connector users from going too close to the reptile until it had safely crossed to the other side. Fortunately, the road and park connector were quiet at the time. After less than a minute the snake re-emerged from the woods at TNP and made a second attempt to cross the road. When it caught sight of the observers, it again returned to TNP. In response, the observers moved further away from the snake, which they had by then identified as a king cobra. It was uniformly brown with pale oblique bands, and the throat region was reddish-orange. Shortly after, the snake re-appeared and successfully crossed OUTR, the park connector, and entered the forest of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. The total length of the cobra was calculated as 3.1 m, based on the measured width of the road. Although it appeared shy and cautious when attempting to cross the road, it seemed determined to head to the other side. While crossing OUTR, the snake took a longer time than expected. It appeared to have difficulty gaining traction on the tarmac, sometimes slipping backwards on the slightly inclined road surface. For nearly a whole minute it appeared to be in a very vulnerable situation with its entire body stretched across the width of the road. Throughout the entire observation, the king cobra had not once behaved in an aggressive or defensive manner. The authors had kept a distance of around 10 metres from the snake. |
